Late November and Decemberis the harvesting time of the “10th month rice,” while planting ofthe winter/spring rice crop began in mid-November and continues until earlyApril. The rice cultivation region can be divided into two areas: the Red Riverdelta in the North and the Mekong River delta in the south; in the Red Riverdelta, map (e) indicates a low VCI because of the planting period. Nationalenvironmental indices show below average rainfall (-7 percent), a temperaturedecrease of about 1 degree compared with the last five years, and a biomassaccumulation of about 10 percent below the average of the last five years. Cropcondition from October to November was below the five-year average because ofthe heavy rains and typhoon Nari (see also section 5.1), affecting Danang, HaTinh, Nghe An, and Quang Binh provinces. However, the storms had a minimaleffect on rice production because these provinces are not the main ricecultivation areas. The profiles of NDVI clusters are about average in both mainrice cultivation areas, gradually increasing between December and January.
