In Hebei province winter wheat growth wasdelayed due to low temperature, but the crop grew quickly after February due toimproved conditions. Unfortunately, cold weather returned in several waves, inhibiting normal crop development. In Shanxi, during late February and April, high temperature and little rain led to the drought. Since then good weathercondition promoted the crop growth until July. After the maize sowing inmid-June, Rainfall exceeded last year’s negatively affected maize growth. FromAugust, sufficient sunshine and suitable temperatures in the North China haveaccelerated the growth of the crops. In Inner Mongolia adequate rainfall andtemperature from July to September led to crop condition comparable with theprevious season. Overall, at the time of the NDVI peak in the region, cropcondition (c) was comparable to the 2012 and slightly above the average of thelast five years. Poor conditions (e)were observed in two locations: southeast Shanxi in May, which resulted in adecrease in wheat yield and production, and southeast Hebei during late summer, resulting in a drop in maize production.
