3.2 Country analysis

This section presents CropWatch analyses for each of 42 key countries (China is addressed in Chapter 4). The maps and graphs refer to crop growing areas only: (a) Phenology of major crops; (b) Crop condition development based on NDVI over crop areas at national scale, comparing the January - April 2020 period to the previous season and the five-year average (5YA) and maximum; (c) Maximum Vegetation Condition Index over arable land (VCIx) for January - April 2020 by pixel; (d) Spatial NDVI patterns up to January - April 2020 according to local cropping patterns and compared to the 5YA; and (e) NDVI profiles associated with the spatial pattern under (d). Next, separate graphs (labeled as figures (f), (g), and subsequent letters) are included to illustrate crop condition development graphs based on NDVI average over crop areas for different agro-ecological zones (AEZ) within a country, again comparing the January - April 2020 period to the previous season and the five-year average (5YA) and maximum.
