Figure 1. Global CPI for the past 11 years during the current monitoring period from January to April
The Crop Production Index (CPI) from 2013 to 2023, for the monitoring period spanning from April to July, reflects the shifting conditions of global crop production. The CPI remained consistently close to the norm of 1.0 between 2013 and 2021, with only a slight decline in 2018. However, the CPI dropped significantly in 2022 to 0.982, indicating relatively poorer global production conditions. A combination of unfavorable factors resulted in a decline in global agricultural productivity during that year. The CPI decreased to 0.977 in 2023 compared to 2022, indicating challenges with global crop production in certain regions and countries.
Figure 2. The distribution of CPI for AEZs from April to July 2023
Specifically, poorer production conditions were observed across Asia, in regions such as Afghanistan, Iran, central and western India, Uzbekistan, and areas along China's Inner Mongolia and Great Wall. In Africa, lower CPI values were noted in Algeria, Morocco, and several southern regions. In addition, certain areas of Australia and Mexico also experienced below-average CPI. Overall, the decline in global CPI from April to July 2023 was primarily attributable to unfavorable effects in specific regions of Asia and Africa. This is inseparable from current global climate variability. To ensure global and regional food security, countries must enhance collaboration, improve agricultural technologies, take proactive steps to address climate change and stabilize production in major food-producing areas, especially in developing countries.
