Based on the NDVI analysis of Ethiopia, crop development shows 2 peaks indicative of the binormal rainfall pattern with first peak in May and main peak in September. The 2016 season showed above normal NDVI index when compared with the 5-year average, however in September and October there NDVI index is below normal indicating that crop development was affected. In terms of spatial NDVI patterns and NDVI profiles higher positive NDVI profiles were observed in the central Ethiopia while most the country experienced negligible signs of NDVI. The spatial NDVI pattern showed that 66.7% of the covered area had NDVI above normal predominantly with a maximum VCI ranging from 0.8 to 1.0 and in some cases more than 1.0. Fewer places of the covered areas had maximum VCI of less than 0.5.
