Based on NDVI, the crop development in Nigeria shows 2 peaks corresponding to first short rainy season (April - July) and the main rainy season (August - March). The 2016 NDVI assessment showed lower than normal (5-year average) during the onset and cessation of the rainy season in terms of crop development for Nigeria. This trend was similar to the 2015 season however much more severe in 2016. In terms of the spatial pattern of NDVI, Nigeria had 82% of the area covered above normal with the north-eastern Niger experiencing the highest NDVI. The lower half of Nigeria showed poorly covered NDVI indicating poor physiological activity of the plants during the measured period. In terms of the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Nigeria was predominantly covered by maximum VCI in the range of 0.8 to 1.0 with more 1.0 experienced in northern parts of Nigeria corresponding to vegetation conditions in the optimal range for plant growth.
