The crop development condition based on NDVI for South Africa indicate a unimodal rainy season from November to May. Based on 5 year NDVI average, the 2016 season showed that the NDVI was below normal from January to July indicate a poor crop development a bit extreme compared to 2015. In terms of spatial patterns and NDVI profiles the eastern half of South Africa and the eastern Cape experienced higher NDVI profiles indicating the potential photosynthetic activity of vegetation in these areas. In the covered areas, few areas experienced maximum VCI of 0.8 to 1.0 and more than 1.0 in the central parts of South Africa. Quite substantial areas experienced maximum VCI of less than 0.5 indicative of poor vegetation conditions and extremely unfavorable plant growth.
