2.19 VietnamChapter 2: Countries Outlook

Authors: lijunbin | Edit: yannn

According to the CropWatch monitoring results (Figure 2.17), during the monitoring period, the planted area of paddy rice in Vietnam decreased by 5.06% compared to the same period in 2025, and the yield dropped by 2.86%. The total production was 4.80 million tons, a decrease of 7.77%. The dual factors of reduced planted area and declining yield levels jointly led to the drop in Vietnam's total rice production, with the reduction in planted area being the more prominent driver.

From the perspective of agroclimatic and agronomic indicators, the CALF  during the monitoring period was 90%, a decrease of 4% compared with the 5-year average for the same period, indicating a reduction in cultivated land area. Meteorological elements showed a characteristic of "abundant precipitation and low temperature": the cumulative precipitation during the period was 285mm, 9% higher than the 15-year average, indicating overall abundant moisture conditions; the average temperature was 22.5°C, which was 0.4°C lower than the 15-year average for the same period. Although the RADPAR improved slightly, the lower temperature limited the effective accumulated temperature for rice, slowing down its growth process and dry matter accumulation rate. This caused the BIOMASS to decrease by 1% compared to the 15-year average, limiting the improvement of rice yield. The Maximum VCI was 0.9 and the CroPI-11 was 0.98, indicating that the overall crop condition during the monitoring period was slightly inferior to the historical norm.

In summary, rice production in Vietnam showed an overall contracting trend during the monitoring period. This was mainly because the lower temperature conditions restricted yield improvement, while the decline in CALF directly led to the reduction in planted area. The combined effects of temperature fluctuations and the decrease in actual sown area resulted in the final decline in total rice production.
