CropWatch monitoring results show that, during the monitoring period, the rice planted area in Vietnam was 1,739.95 thousand hectares, down 4.45% from the same period in 2025. Rice yield was 3,499 kg/ha, down 2.87% year-on-year, and total rice production was 6.088 million tons, down 7.2% year-on-year (Figure 2.26). The reduction in planted area and the decline in yield jointly led to the decrease in Vietnam’s total rice production, with the decline in planted area being the main factor.


In terms of agro-climatic and agronomic indicators, cumulative rainfall in Vietnam during the monitoring period was 211 mm, 33% below the average of the past 15 years, indicating a significant shortage of natural precipitation. The average temperature was 27.3°C, 0.4°C above the 15-year average, suggesting generally sufficient thermal conditions. However, extreme high temperatures in some areas reached 41.9°C during the monitoring period, affecting rice growth. Photosynthetically active radiation was 804 MJ/m², 2% below the 15-year average, indicating slightly weak radiation conditions. Affected by insufficient rainfall and slightly weak radiation, potential cumulative biomass was 755 gDM/m², 19% below the 15-year average, which limited dry matter accumulation and yield formation of rice. The maximum Vegetation Condition Index was 0.86, indicating that vegetation conditions remained relatively favorable during the monitoring period, but were insufficient to offset the adverse effects of water deficit and reduced biomass on yield formation.


Overall, rice production in Vietnam showed a declining trend during the monitoring period. Significantly below-average rainfall and reduced potential cumulative biomass were the main factors limiting yield improvement, while the reduction in rice planted area further amplified the production decline. The simultaneous decreases in planted area and yield jointly led to a notable year-on-year reduction in Vietnam’s total rice production.
