CropWatch monitoring results indicate that, as of August 20, 2026, Mexico’s maize planted area was approximately 9.328 million hectares, up 0.3% year on year. The average yield was 2,419 kg/ha, down 6.4% year on year, while total production was forecast at 22.57 million tonnes, a decrease of approximately 6.1%. The production decline was mainly attributable to lower yields.
During the monitoring period, nationwide precipitation was 1% above the long-term average, temperatures were 0.3°C above average, and potential cumulative biomass increased by 1%, indicating that overall agroclimatic conditions were close to normal. However, rainfall was unevenly distributed across regions. In the tropical rainforest zone, precipitation was 32% below average and potential biomass declined by 12%. Some major production areas were also affected by intermittent drought and high temperatures. Although the cropped arable land fraction and overall vegetation conditions remained generally favorable, adverse weather may have affected maize pollination and grain filling, resulting in lower yields.
