Based on the report of major wheat-producing regions in June, the scope of this issue has been expanded to cover all wheat-producing areas across France. From March to June 2025, wheat in France went through the green-up, jointing, grain filling and maturity-harvest stages, and the current harvesting has been fully completed.
CropWatch monitoring shows that France's wheat planted area in 2025 was 5.63 million hectares, a slight year-on-year increase of 0.8% (compared with 5.59 million hectares in 2024). The main reasons for the area growth are that farmers expanded the planting scale of winter wheat after the improvement of sowing conditions last autumn, and some spring crops were converted to wheat planting. Although the area has increased steadily, the yield per unit area is facing downward pressure: the estimated average yield per unit area is 7.71 tons per hectare, a year-on-year decrease of 1.1% (compared with 7.80 tons per hectare in 2024). The decline in yield per unit area is mainly due to heatwaves in some regions. Taking the northern barley region as an example, the cumulative precipitation was 50% lower than the 15-year average, and the average temperature was 1.8 ℃ higher. Wheat crops in the grain filling stage were under significant yield stress. Despite the adverse climatic conditions, the overall decline in yield per unit area is controllable. Considering the expanded planted area and the decreased yield per unit area, France's total wheat output in 2025 is basically the same as that in 2024.
CropWatch also monitored France's barley planted area and output during the same period.
